Why peach curl the leaves. Leaf curl of peach. Recommendations for treatment.
Peach in recent years is gaining popularity among our gardeners because of its outstanding qualities and the early appearance of fruit. A lot of its spread is facilitated by the variety and availability of planting material, as well as climate warming.
One of the most dangerous and harmful diseases of peach is peach leaf curl.
Peach leaf curl is caused by a microscopic fungus tarinai (Taphrina). It attacks leaves, young growing shoots, and occasionally flowers and fruits.
The first symptoms appear in the opening of leaves in may. First the leaves turn pale, turn to yellowish-pink color, their surface becomes uneven, bubbly, they are strongly deformed, curled, become fragile.
After some time on the underside of leaves covered with white waxy coating of sporulation. Shoots from infected leaves stop growing, become thickened and distorted, turn yellow.
Later these leaves and shoots die, which greatly weakens the tree, which loses power due to the loss of the crown. Severe damage to the curliness for several years can lead to drying of peach trees.
Treatment peach leaf curl.
Since the main source of infection is the mycelium and spores of wintering under bud scales, in cracks of bark and diseased branches and twigs, and specialized defenses curl we have not, and the main way to fight the virus is prevention in the form of a universal treatment by fungicides during swelling and bud break.
It was at this point the infection of new leaves curl, and, if we have time to prevent, reduce symptoms of the disease to a minimum.
What are the deadlines for spraying the peach.
So, the first treatment is in the spring before buds break – 3% solution of Bordeaux mixture or copper sulfate. We protect the peach and from the second dangerous disease – perforated leaf spot (Clasterosporium) and other fungal diseases.
The second treatment – during swelling and bud break of peach. You can use fungicides such as Horus (the only fungicide that is active when the air temperature is 6-8°C, unlike other drugs, which act at a temperature between +15°C); Topsin M, Bayleton, Fast, Delan.
In Russia approved for use fungicides such as Planriz and Trichoderma.
If during flowering peach is rainy weather, spraying one of the above fungicides (except for the preparations of copper) can be repeated.
If infection has already occurred on shoots appeared curly leaves we have to:
1) remove these shoots from trees;
2) carry out preventive spraying, provided that until the beginning of ripening peaches in no less than 3 weeks.
We have to repeat treatment with copper sulfate or Bordo mix in autumn.
Be sure to hold annual pruning peach with removal of infected shoots and periodic renewal pruning.
After pruning you should immediately burn all infected shoots.
To increase resistance of peach to curl and other fungal diseases it is necessary to ensure sufficient watering trees and balanced nutrition (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium + trace elements).
