Ohhhh sayyy can you see??? By the dawn’s early light…….
Huh? What? Oh that’s just “The Star-Spangled Banner”….the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from a poem written in 1814 by the poet Francis Scott Key. Don’t know if you saw it, but last night was Superbowl Sunday. The biggest event in American football. Two teams come head to head and last night, the Seattle Seahawks killed the Denver Broncos.
Before the Superbowl, the beautiful National Anthem is always sung. In fact, singing it is an honored tradition before most major sporting events. It is one of the most difficult songs to sing, even for trained singers. The vocal range goes from really low notes to very high ones. Plus, the lyrics are difficult as well, causing many singers to make mistakes!
Check them out for yourself:
O say can you see by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
There have been 2 really famous versions of this song performed on live television. One being the best of all time. The other being the worst. Let’s begin with the worst.
Sung by comedienne Roseanne Barr at a 1990 San Diego Padres baseball game. Hmmmmm….WARNING: your ears might start bleeding.
The following year, Whitney Houston gave us her AMAZING rendition at Superbowl XXV in Tampa, Florida in 1991. Every time we hear this song, it brings tears to our eyes and we are so proud to be American!
