George Washington was the first President of the United States of America.  He is known for leading the Continental Army to it’s victory over the British during the American Revolution.  He is one of the most loved and popular Presidents of the US of A.

  1. He died of a throat infection.
  2. He was a Pisces.
  3. He was the only president elected with a unanimous electoral vote.  (All state representatives voted for him)
  4. He wore dentures made of ivory.
  5. In his will, he gave freedom to his slaves.
  6. He was six feet tall (1.82 meters).  Very tall for the 1700′s.
  7. He never served as President in the capital of Washington D.C. (which was named after him).  In his first year as President, New York City was the capital and then it moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  8. He formed the first presidential cabinet which included his friends Thomas Jefferson (Secretary of State) and Alexander Hamilton (Secretary of the Treasury).
  9. He felt it was important for the President to not be in office for too long or have too much power, like a king.  So he stepped down after 8 years (2 terms).
  10. His wife was Martha Dandridge Custis, a widow.
  11. He had no biological children, but raised his wife’s 2 children from her former marriage.
  12. Washington grew up in Colonial Virginia.
  13. His father died when he was only 11 years old.
  14. His older brother Lawrence raised him.
  15. He inherited his family’s fortune and estate, Mount Vernon, at the young age of 20 years old.
  16. He had hundreds of slaves.
  17. He was a master, tobacco grower.
  18. Washington was one of the wealthiest landowners in Virginia.
  19. George did not attend college (university), but trained as a surveyor.
  20. Washington did his own bookkeeping and recorded every penny of expense or profit.  His ledgers still exist today.
  21. He warned against permanent alliances with foreign powers.
